April 2008
Grove ferry and an evening walk at Chambers Wall.
20/04/08
A singing Wren along the river bank this morning at Grove ferry.
Unforeseen circumstances only enabled me to get out for an hour today, from 12 noon until 1.00 pm, which saw me walk from the Grove ferry reserve entrance along the river bank for Half a mile and back again. New ticks for the year came in the shape of a Lesser Whitethroat, singing from the Paddock area, and 4 Hobbies flying over the reserve, hanging about in the region of the Harrison’s and Turf Field hide areas. Other birds of note along the way were several Blackcaps singing from the other side of the river, 3 Chiffchaffs, a Wren, numerous Cetti’s Warblers, 4 Long-tailed Tits and 2 Nightingales, which were both heard along the river Bank. 4 Marsh Harriers were seen, 2 Sparrow-hawks, several Swallows and Sand Martins but only 1 House Martin.
An early evening walk with Jim Johnson around the Wantsum fishermans carpark and along the Chambers Wall at Reculver produced a smart Male Wheatear, and in the carpark was a Turtle Dove, my first of the year.
